Religious Activities


Devasthan performs various religious festivals throughout the year. Main festivals are as under:-

  1. MAHASHIVRATRI-

    In the olden days, Ati–Rudra Swahakar with 110 priest used to be performed on Mahashivratra day. Now Maharudra Swahakar and Rudra Jap is performed on this day. Unique feature of this celebration is that entire religious activity is performed by 50 Lady priests under the Lady Acharya since last 40 years. Thousands of devotees throng the temple from previous midnight to next midnight .Prasad is distributed to all devotees on mahashivratri.

  2. SHRAVANI SOMVAR-

    Special Abhishek and prayers are performed on all Mondays in the month of Shravan. Huge crowds visit the temple on all days during Shravan mas.

  3. TRIPURI POORNIMA-

    Similar to Ramlila maidan Ravan vadh in New Delhi, Omkareshwar celebrates TRIPURASUR VADH(EXECUTION) on this night. A classical dance performance is held in the courtyard propitiating Lord Mahadev. At the end, Mahadev performs TANDAV NRUTY and then proceeds on his chariot to the set of THREE TRIPURASUR NAGARI AND HIS THREE DEMON SONS. Lord Mahadev shoots them with one arrow and the whole Nagari with demons explodes into beautiful fireworks. Thousands gather on the bank of river to see this spectacle.

  4. DAILY POOJA & ABHISHEK-

    Through out the year, devotees perform various Pooja and Abhishek in the temple for which Arrangements are made by Trust office. Official priest performs these for devotees.

    Unique Pooja in Omkareshwar temple is “CHAKKA POOJA.” Murty of Mahadev in various forms are made on the Shivling with Chakka (Thick yogurt ) . The Gabhara is decorated with flowers. As there are too many Devotees wishing to perform this pooja, who want to host this pooja, have to book dates in advance through Trust office. Various shapes and Avatars of Shiva are sculptured in Chakka.

    During summer, on the first Monday of May month, CHANDAN POOJA (Sandalwood paste) is performed. Mahadev murty is formed with Chandan paste . Gabhara is decorated with flowers. This paste is distributed to devotees as Prasad. Light classical musical consort is held in the evening.
